Description

The Benedictine convent of Niederprüm was an abbey of Benedictine nuns in Prüm-Niederprüm. It existed from 1190 until secularization in 1802.

When the abbey of Susteren was destroyed at the end of the 12th century, Abbess Sophie of Vianden fled to Gerhard of Vianden, the abbot of Prüm, who founded the convent of Niederprüm for her, together with other family members, in 1190, of which she became the first abbess. For the convent church, Niederprüm received the relics of the holy martyrs Gordianus and Epimachus brought by Abbot Markward in 844. The convent was always a foundation for noble ladies. In the 15th century, it adopted the statutes of the Bursfeld Congregation. In 1576, the rights of the abbey of Prüm over Niederprüm were transferred to Trier. The abbesses were often recruited from the Trier monastery of St. Irminen. In 1794, the French Revolution led to the unofficial dissolution, and in 1802 to the official dissolution of the convent.
