The Grimberg Sickle is a pedestrian bridge in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. It leads over the Rhine-Herne Canal. The bridge is part of the Erzbahntrasse, a former railway line that has been developed into a bicycle route.
The bridge, which was inaugurated in 2009, is designed as an asymmetrical steel structure. It crosses the canal in a semicircular arc. The span of the bridge between the abutments is 141 metres. In total, the bridge is 153 meters long. This makes it one of the longest curved pedestrian bridges in the world. It hangs from a 48-meter-high steel pylon on the north side of the canal. On the north side, a 37-metre-long ramp formed by concrete retaining walls leads to the bridge. On the south side, a 34-metre-long ramp built as an earth dam forms the connection to the ore railway line. More than 600 cubic metres of concrete and 400 tonnes of steel were used. 235 metres of large bored piles were installed for the abutments and 465 metres of rope for the suspension structure. In September 2010, the Grimberg Sickle received the European Steel Bridges Award 2010 in the category "Pedestrian Bridges".
