The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Battle of the Ardennes, is the last major offensive of the German Wehrmacht on the Western Front of World War II. The battle took place in the Ardennes, from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, and was won by the Allies. In the English-speaking world, this battle is known as the Battle of the Bulge, as the front line had the shape of a bulge or pocket.
The offensive caused tensions between the British and the Americans. The planned Allied attacks in the Rhineland were postponed by six weeks. Both the Germans and the Americans suffered heavy losses in tanks and personnel. However, the Americans had practically inexhaustible material reserves. The Germans, on the other hand, had no armored reserves left to face the massive offensive of the Red Army, which broke out on January 12, 1945, along the Vistula. By the end of January, the Soviet armies were at the gates of Berlin.
