Brackel was first mentioned in writing on February 6, 1300, in the document book of the St. Michaelis Monastery in Lüneburg. However, traces of settlement in the area can be found in artifacts dating back to prehistoric times, from the younger Stone Age through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. These indicate that the main settlement sites were not at the present location, but rather towards Quarrendorf and Toppenstedt. A burial find from the Jastorf culture indicates that people were already buried in Brackel around 550 to 400 BC.
On July 1, 1972, the municipality of Thieshope was incorporated.
