Brackel werd voor het eerst schriftelijk vermeld op 6 februari 1300 in het aktenboek van het klooster St. Michaelis te Lüneburg. Sporen van een bewoning van het gebied zijn echter te vinden in vondsten uit de prehistorie, van de jongere Steentijd via de Bronstijd tot de IJzertijd. Hieruit blijkt dat de belangrijkste nederzettingen niet op de huidige plek lagen, maar eerder in de richting van Quarrendorf en Toppenstedt. Een urnvondst uit de Jastorf-cultuur geeft aan dat er in Brackel al rond 550 tot 400 voor Christus mensen werden begraven.
Op 1 juli 1972 werd de gemeente Thieshope ingelijfd.
