Brackel è stato menzionato per la prima volta per iscritto il 6 febbraio 1300 nel libro delle pergamene del monastero di San Michele a Lüneburg. Tuttavia, i segni di una colonizzazione della località si trovano già in reperti risalenti a tempi preistorici, dall'età della pietra recente fino all'età del bronzo e all'età del ferro. Da essi si evince che i principali luoghi di insediamento non si trovavano nell'attuale posizione, ma piuttosto in direzione di Quarrendorf e Toppenstedt. Un ritrovamento di urne dalla cultura di Jastorf indica che a Brackel già intorno al 550-400 a.C. le persone venivano sepolte.
Il 1° luglio 1972 il comune di Thieshope è stato incorporato.
