Erstmals schriftlich erwähnt wurde Brackel am 6. Februar 1300 im Urkundenbuch des Klosters St. Michaelis zu Lüneburg. Spuren einer Besiedelung der Gemarkung finden sich aber an Funden schon aus prähistorischer Zeit, von der jüngeren Steinzeit durch die Bronzezeit bis in die Eisenzeit. Aus ihnen geht hervor, dass die Hauptsiedlungsplätze nicht an der heutigen Stelle, sondern eher in Richtung Quarrendorf und Toppenstedt lagen. Ein Urnenfund aus der Jastorf-Kultur besagt, dass in Brackel schon um 550 bis 400 vor Christus Menschen bestattet wurden.
Am 1. Juli 1972 wurde die Gemeinde Thieshope eingegliedert.
