Maria Wald Monastery [Heimbach /Rureifel]

Above the town of Heimbach, in the heart of the Eifel National Park, lies the Abbey of Mariawald at an altitude of 417 m. For centuries, Mariawald has been a place of prayer and pilgrimage as the only male Trappist monastery in Germany.
The daily routine of the monks is characterized by prayer, reading, and work. The monks invite all visitors to participate in prayer times and the daily Holy Mass. Also outside of prayer times, the abbey church invites visitors to pause for quiet prayer. Guests can retreat to the silence of the monastery for a few days by prior arrangement. An own guesthouse is available for this purpose.

Today, the monks and staff of Mariawald manage a monastery café with a sun terrace, a bookstore and art shop, a liqueur factory, and the monastery shop. The typical Mariawald monastery products such as pea soup, liqueurs, truffle chocolates, pastries, mustard, and creams are well-known beyond the region. In addition, beef from species-appropriate animal husbandry, seasonal game from the surrounding forests, and products from other Trappist monasteries such as Trappist beer and cheese from Belgium are offered.
In the monastery bookstore, visitors will find a wide range of religious literature, devotional items, art cards, and much interesting information about the national park and the Eifel region. Access to the church, café, monastery shop, and bookstore is designed to be barrier-free. The playground "The Ark" is popular among children. There is ample parking available for cars and buses.
In January 2018, the dissolution and sale of the monastery were decided.
