One of the seven wells that served as public water sources in the town of Bernkastel in the Middle Ages.
The public fountains were located on the market square, the Bärenpütz, the Graacher Gate, the Capuchin Cross, the Roman street at the Eichamt, the Kallenfelspütz and the Tonnebörchen on the banks.
In medieval Bernkastel-Kues, public wells, known locally as “Pütz” or “Bore” , played a crucial role in everyday life. These wells provided the inhabitants with drinking water and water for household tasks such as washing and cleaning. Although many houses had their own Pütz, there were also several public wells scattered throughout the town.
