The Heimbach dam in Heimbach serves together with the Obermaubach reservoir as a balancing basin for the hydropower plants of the Urft dam (Heimbach power plant) and the Rur dam. It compensates for the water level fluctuations (Urft wave) caused by the intermittent operation of the hydropower plants of the two larger dams.
The small dam with a gravity dam made of rammed concrete is located directly below the Rur dam on the Rur River in the Düren district. It is operated by the Eifel-Rur water association. It has its own hydroelectric power plant with an output of 775 kW. The spillway is weir-like and has an 18 m wide fish belly flap to adjust the water level at least during nearly full capacity.
