The Neubau Church is a former university church and a secularized Renaissance church in Würzburg, which today serves as the auditorium of the University of Würzburg. It is considered one of the most significant church buildings of the Renaissance north of the Alps. Construction began in 1583 by master builder Georg Robin and was completed with the tower by Antonio Petrini from 1679 to 1703. The tower was newly constructed by Balthasar Neumann and Joseph Greising. After its destruction in World War II, the reconstruction of the Neubau Church took place between 1970 and 1985.
In 1582, the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg, Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, founded a university in his residence city and commissioned the Mainz court master builder Georg Robin, who came from Flanders, to construct the buildings. From 1583, the large square complex of what is now the Old University began to take shape, with the university church in the south wing. Its construction began in 1586; it was consecrated on September 8, 1591. It soon became known to the public as Neubau Church. The heart of the founder was, according to his wish, buried in the church in a tomb monument built near the pulpit in 1617. The heart monument was created, like a now-lost stone high altar with its alabaster reliefs and the pulpit with alabaster sculptures by Georg Robin's brother Johann Robin, between the years 1583 and 1589.
