Discover all benefitsLast update July 28, 2022: a very bad road (after the summit of the horse's head (near Sötenich)) has been removed from the route.
The southern part of the route around Schleiden is characterized by steeper climbs with lengths of 1.5 to 2 km. The route here often leads along lonely, well-paved roads, which are closed to traffic with the exception of agricultural traffic, the so-called farm roads. This part of the route is partly based on the RTF of the RadSportVerein Euskirchen. On the eastern part of the route, the landscape is characterized by light hills with agriculture and small villages. The northern and last part of the route has the greatest differences in altitude, around Heimbach and Gemünd. The ascent to Haus Kermeter is the longest climb on the route (5.5 kilometers in length). More details about the route can be found below.
From Vogelsang you set off on a tour through the North Eifel, you follow the route counterclockwise. In order to avoid the main road between Herhahn and Einruhr, the old tank road is taken to Herhahn. In the past, tanks drove on this concrete slab road (the road is included in the North Rhine-Westphalia cycle path network).
From Herhahn you cycle on a side road through the Höddelbachtal to Scheuren (note: quite steep descent on a narrow road!), the ascent away from the Röddelbachtal is not long but quite steep. In Scheuren you descend via a winding, quite quiet district road to Schleiden, and you also end up briefly (800 meters) on a main road (unfortunately unavoidable). Schleiden itself has houses in the center along the river Olef, some of which hang above the river. From Schleiden you cycle to the village of Olef, but just before Olef you turn right and so you don't get to see the town of Olef itself, where there are several half-timbered houses.
Then follows the ascent to Wintzen on a quiet road. Then it goes up and down with climbs up to a maximum of 2 km in length (namely those of the Pferdekopf and the Hubertushof), partly due to forest area, partly agricultural. Then you end up in the extreme eastern part of the route, in the Vooreifel: You now cycle mainly through agricultural land (just at the edge of the Eifel forest) to the north, the terrain is undulating with steep slopes of no more than about 50 meters high.
On the extreme northern part of the route, a country road leads down to Heimbach in the valley of the Rur (Dutch: Roer). Heimbach is a beautiful place, so definitely worth a break. A very good restaurant in Heimbach is Zur Alten Mühle, which is located in a historic building about 200 meters from the route. From Heimbach there are longer climbs. And this is immediately the longest on this route to Heimbach, namely from 5.5 kilometers in length to the Kermeter: a plateau south of Heimbach. On the ascent you will pass Henriette Platz, a beautiful viewpoint of the Roertal and Heimbach. Unfortunately, it is true that motorcyclists also include this climb in their routes on weekends. The B265 is used as a descent from Kermeter to Gemünd (2.5 km). In Gemünd you quickly leave the busy roads and climb on quiet side roads to Herhahn to avoid the busy main road between Gemünd and Herhahn. Via the Panzerstraße you cycle back to Vogelsang to avoid the main road.
