Route 14.7. The route follows the Swalm on both the Dutch and German sides. From the Groenewoud in the Netherlands, you pass through the forest to the Elmpter Bruch. Always near water. Beautiful views and forest alternate.
Netherlands or Germany?
Already on the riverbed of the Swalm, the hiker can tell whether they are on the Dutch or German side: In Germany, the river was canalized starting in 1904, while in the Netherlands, it remained more or less untouched.
On the German side of the border, there is a forest area, while on the Dutch side, the area often still has the character of a primeval forest. For hikers, the path along the border has long been a well-kept secret. It runs along winding roads past damp meadows and ponds in front of the
Protection of all plant and animal species: across the juniper heath, through the northern part of the Schwalmbruch to the open waters of the Elmpter Bruch.
