East of the city Rathenow lies the dense Rathenower Stadtforst, which the citizens of the city received as a gift over 700 years ago. The diverse forest not only serves forestry purposes, but is also a popular recreational area and destination for excursions. Two running tracks start at Ferchesarer Weg and are very suitable for beginner hikers with lengths of 3 km and 5.5 km. Follow the narrow footpath parallel to the road, which soon leads into the forest as a wider forest path on the right. On the left side stretches the typical Märkischer pine forest, on the right a diverse mixed forest. Attention cyclists! The Havellandradweg crosses here. The track was built in 1900 for a narrow-gauge railway that ran from Rathenow to Paulinenaue. The people of Havelland nicknamed the small train Stille Pauline (Silent Pauline), as the bumpy ride was interrupted by many stops. The first part of the trail corresponds to the nature trail. At several information boards, you will learn about the animal and plant species that inhabit the city forest. At the next intersection, you decide. The shorter route continues along the nature trail. Follow the trail sharply to the right, and you will soon return to the starting point. As a passionate hiker, take the left path through the city forest towards Rauhen Berg. The forest transforms along the way into a beautiful beech mixed forest, which puts on its red-orange coat in autumn. The rare elm is still common in the city forest and enchants the forest with a yellow color explosion in autumn. Thus, you will be entertained with various colors as you hike through the increasingly undulating terrain. It goes up and down and in a wide arc around Rauhen Berg. The second half of the route leads you on a narrow path through a fairly young mixed pine forest. Later, the nature trail joins back in. When you hear the rooster crow behind the trees, you are almost back at the starting point.TIP: Take a short detour to the top of Rauhen Berg! For the 700th anniversary of the donation, the people of Rathenow have erected a memorial stone that commemorates the long-standing connection of the city with the forest.
