Description by the author

When you visit Eisenhüttenstadt, you are entering historically the “first socialist town on German soil” if you think of the origins of the town that was called Stalinstadt when it was founded. In 1950, homes for the workers were need following the development of the steel industry along the River Oder. And so today’s Eisenhüttenstadt was created, which was continually expanded over the following decades. The individual stages in the architecture of the former GDR can be seen more vividly and clearly here than anywhere else. After German Reunification, the “Everyday Culture in the GDR” documentation centre was set up, which now displays over 90,000 objects from everyday life in the east of Germany.

The suburb of Fürstenberg, on the other hand, has reached a fine old age, having been founded in 1255. In contrast with the “model socialist town”, it radiates a particular charm, with its narrow streets, the old “Fischerkiez” (fishermen’s neighbourhood) and 14th century parish church.

Relaxing in the various water attractions in the Inselbad Eisenhüttenstadt pool complex or enjoying a variety of culture in the town’s four museums make a visit here a great all-round experience.
Tom Hanks was the most famous tourist here, in December 2011 and May 2014. Afterwards, he raved about “Iron Hut City” on US television (Eisenhüttenstadt translates as ‘iron works city’).
