Those who would like to take a little more time to explore the idyllic area will enjoy a hike following the traces of old traditions from the times of the Great Elector Frederick William. The starting point is Brieskow-Finkenheerd in the direction of Wiesenau. Passing the Gasthaus “Zum Oderfischer”, walk along the Friedrich-Wilhelm Canal, which was completed in 1668 under the Great Elector to the former Lock Keeper’s House. Today, an inscription to the construction on behalf of Frederick William still recalls the Brieskow Lock, the first of an original run of 14 locks in what used to be the most important water trading route from Breslau to Hamburg. Continue to follow the path, which changes between both banks, until you come to the memorial in remembrance of the 200-year history of the Friedrich-Wilhelm Canal, erected in 1869, next to Weißenberg Lock. Because the locks were destroyed at the end of the Second World War, a fascinating world of animals and plants has reconquered the entire canal. The present Oder-Spree Canal was built in 1860 to reduce the load on the Friedrich-Wilhelm Canal, robbing it of some of its significance. Leaving the Klixmühle and Groß Lindow locks behind you, you will come directly to the jetty for the “Treidelkahn” (barge).
A trip in one of these historic barges through the gentle natural landscape is highly recommended. Next to the Groß Lindow lock, you can take a break in the welcoming “Preussenstuben” rooms. Reinvigorated, you can start on the return leg, past the Neo-Gothic church towards Klixmühle, the first cutting and grinding mill in the Land Lebus region. On the section as far as Finkenheerd Lock, stay on the right-hand side of the canal, where you can enjoy the idyllic landscape again, before finally returning to the Gasthaus “Zum Oderfischer”. You really shouldn’t miss a little circular tour with the “Blaue Anne” fishing raft across the beautiful Lake Brieskow as far as the Steile Wand cliff, an ideal breeding spot for countless rare species of birds.
“Treidelpfade” is the German name for the paths along which the wooden cargo barges were towed upstream by people or draught horses in the past.
