Description by the author

Come on, let's go to the sea! A relaxed late-riser day for wandering foodies.

The impressive Scharmützelsee, affectionately called the “Märkische Meer” by Fontane, awaits you with the perfect holiday scenery. Embedded in the Saarow hill country and only 60 km from Berlin's Alexanderplatz, the second largest natural body of water in Brandenburg is waiting to be discovered. Here you can finally get out on an extended half-day tour and really get moving - a lot of nature, beach and fantastic views of the blue water included.
That'll do you good:
One-way tour on the "Uferwanderweg Westufer" withgreat viewsRecharge your batteries in beautiful nature. Omnipresent: the crystal clear ScharmützelseeMany natural bathing areas and beaches Real foodie highlights by the water with a finale in Bad Saarow
Start: Wendisch Rietz train station
Destination: Bad Saarow train station
Length: 15 km / approx. 3.5-4 hours of pure walking time
How to get there by public transport: RE / S-Bahn to Königs-Wusterhausen, then RB36 to Wendisch Rietz
Departure public transport: From Bad Saarow with RB35, further in Fürstenwalde with RE1, every hour

Scandinavian flair in Wendisch Rietz
After around 70 minutes, the regional train stops in little Wendisch Rietz. Can you hear the seagulls calling? Here the Scharmützelsee opens to the north and off we go on the riverside hiking trail. If you need something to refresh yourself now, you can get supplies in the Ateliercafé. You can dare to take a look at Sweden with a detour into the port area. Typically Scandinavian, the red and yellow wooden houses greet you from the water.

Nature and steep banks
After crossing the town, you dive deeper into nature. In addition to the nature trail, the terrain drops noticeably towards the lake and you hike through the steep forest towards Saarow Strand.

The perfect lake view
... you have from the terraces of the "Dorsch". When the sun is shining and a light breeze is blowing, you think you are at the sea with a view of the marina. But you're in Brandenburg and the Dorsch is also cooked with regional ingredients: fish from the Scharmützelsee, cheese from the Marienhöhe farm, meat from Fürstenwalde or vegan chilli sin carne.

Beach or lawn
Would you like to cool down? The former lido Neptun with its lost place character and the Kleistpark and Lustgarten bathing spots opposite the Kormoraninsel offer you fantastic views of the maritime activity - and the best bathing water quality.

Tour finale: sophisticated architecture and foodie hotspot in Bad Saarow
The “skyline” of Bad Saarow is already apparent on the last few kilometers. Magnificent historical villas line the lake shore. It's relaxed and you let yourself go. Time to wrap up your late riser tour with a culinary reward. Whether a classic beer garden under chestnut trees, a steakhouse, regional cuisine, Italian or café, a ramen soup or cross over between Peru & Japan - the choice is yours! How about a relaxed après-ski hike in Nobelscharf? Avocado fries, currywurst and champagne are not mutually exclusive in the casual beach bar. By the way: the last train goes to Berlin at 10:27 p.m.

Refreshment tips:
Wendisch Rietz: Homemade lemonade in the Ateliercafe
Saarow Strand: The "Dorsch"
Bad Saarow: Saarow Marina ice cream parlor, beer garden at Scharmützelsee, coffee roastery, Amiceria, Le Gâteau rose and many other options
