Fairytale ambience
The regional train takes you to the small Hubertushöhe stop. You are only a few meters away from Storkower See. The entrance couldn't be nicer: You will be welcomed by Hubertushöhe Castle. The former hunting lodge borders directly on the lake and is nestled in a large, picturesque park with old trees and fragrant meadows. The magnificent property with castle, terrace, pretty outbuildings, fisherman's cottage with snack bar and beer garden as well as the harbor with boathouses was acquired by two industrialists in 2012. They want to use their previous use as a luxury hotel to create a place for everyone who is interested in art, culture and literature. The park is open from April to October.

Babylon Berlin on Storkower See
Hubertushöhe Castle is currently used as an event location for weddings and conferences and you can stroll through the park and the lake in a relaxed atmosphere. There are lots of photo opportunities! Fun fact: In the first season of the “Babylon Berlin” series, the hunting seat becomes an elite rowing club and the Storkower See is quickly converted into the Wannsee. The main characters Charlotte and Greta spend a day full of fateful encounters on its banks.

Along the lake and past lost places
The tour now takes you as a riverside path with beautiful views along the Storkower See and towards Wendisch Rietz. A special place is the little church of St. Maria. It was built in the shape of a fish from wood and can be admired with a short detour to Robert-Koch-Straße. The trail on the shore also takes you to a hidden swimming area. Across the street in the forest can be seen abandoned buildings that belonged to a former rest home of the National Defense Council of the GDR.

On wooden planks through the marshland
This is followed by a beautiful section through a nature reserve. The adventurous Knüppeldamm, now also recognizable as the 66-Seen-Weg, crosses the mystical alder forest and a swamp area. Endangered species such as otters, bats and the moor frog live here. Fun fact: In order to impress the ladies, the otherwise brown moor frog males can develop an intense blue color for a few days during the spawning season in April.

Scandinavian flair in Wendisch Rietz
In Wendisch Rietz, the Storkower See and the Märkische Meer, as Fontane called the imposing Scharmützelsee, are connected by a canal. Here the clear lake opens far to the north. You can chill out on a large lawn and jump into the cool water at the bathing area at the southern tip of the lake. Or you can try the homemade apple and mint lemonade, ice cream and homemade cakes in the friendly Atelier Café in the old village school across the street.
If you still have time, you can make a detour to Scandinavia. You cross the lock bridge over to the small harbor in around 20 minutes. As in Sweden, the red and yellow wooden houses greet you from the water.
Plan your late riser hiking tour now!
