A pilgrimage path leads to the former Cistercian monastery of Lehnin, known as the Bernhardspfad, in honor of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and his spiritual legacy. Many people discover pilgrimage as a way to pause and draw strength for themselves. This route is a recommended hiking experience even without a spiritual background. The northern route (21 km) starts at the monastery complex, which is both inspiring and contemplative to visit. You leave the grounds via the historic oak avenue, once used by the monks. Passing through extensive pine forests, you reach the village of Nahmitz, before immersing back into a quiet, dense forest. The spacious natural bathing area at Netzener See with a jetty and sunbathing lawn is the perfect place for a rest. The trail now follows the lakes shore with partly wild and romantic views of the lakeside. The Rietzer See nature reserve is dominated by tall reeds and vast grasslands, home to countless protected bird species. Passing through Trechwitz and Damsdorf with their remarkable churches, you return to Nahmitz. Walk through the Klosterheide on the eastern shore of Klostersee to return to Lehnin. From there, the southern route (14 km) leads through the village and forest to the shore of Gohlitzsee. The lake accompanies you for a while before the path winds through the diverse forest to Rädel. Meadows and heath areas provide glimpses of the lake. Beyond Rädel, the path crosses hilly and sandy fields to Emstal. From the heights, there are views back to the village and forward to the lower-lying Rädeler Zitzel and Emstaler Zitzel, small glacial waters that serve as a retreat for many water birds. In Emstal, you can admire historical ovens in addition to the Backofenmuseum, where Emstaler Kugelbrote are baked on a few days each year. Finally, the path winds back through the forest until you reach the first houses of Lehnin at the sports center.TIP: All churches along the way can be visited for prayer or sightseeing. It is advisable to coordinate access in advance with local contacts.Trail Marking: red B on a black backgroundStart/Finish: Lehnin MarketplaceLength/Hiking Time: 35 km/8.5 hrs (north route 21 km/5 hrs, south route 14 km/3.5 hrs)Suitable for: experienced hikersParking: Parking at Markgrafenplatz, Monastery Grounds Parking LotPublic Transport: Lehnin Bus Station, buses 550, 553, 554, 566, 567, 580, 645
