On the leisurely hike up to the Ödland Chapel, we immerse ourselves in the history of the Banat Swabians and can relive their history at four stations.
The Banat Swabians are the name given to the population group that settled parts of the Pannonian Plain at the end of the 17th/beginning of the 18th century as part of a controlled colonization. As a result of the Turkish wars, these partly devastated areas were transferred from the Ottoman Empire to Austria, which subsequently recruited settlers. The waves of settlers, followed by hundreds of thousands of people from Central Europe, went down in history as the Swabian migrations. The saying "death to the first, hardship to the second, bread to the third" makes it clear that it took two generations for the land to yield enough to provide for its inhabitants.</p
