Traumschleife Wolfsweg

The contrasts could hardly be greater: The eerily beautiful howling of wolves in Merzig's Kammerforst forest and later breathtaking silence on the Kreuzberg in the Garden of the Senses. In between, a varied route along shady forest paths, colorful flower meadows and a section through an apple orchard. Plus sweeping views of the Saar valley and the Merzig basin.

Varied forests with a deep stream notch, a meadow landscape rich in hedges and scattered fruit trees and, of course, the wolves of the world-famous open-air enclosure make this tour a special experience. Because of the wolves and the short distance, the tour is also ideal for family outings.

Werner Freund (2.3.1933 - 9.2.2014) built the first wolf enclosure at the Wolfspark in Kammerforst, just outside the district town of Merzig, in 1977. For over 30 years, Werner Freund was involved in wolf behavioral research, became a "wolf among wolves" and became the lead wolf of the Merzig pack. Freund has raised over 70 wolves in various wolf packs. As a result, the district town of Merzig became known worldwide as the "city of wolves".

The trail begins right next to the wolf enclosure, through shady mixed forest. It gets dark through the Grätschlucht gorge. From the valley, 44 steps lead upwards via a tree ladder. Rivulets run through the slope, jungle-like forest images wherever you look.

The forest opens up towards an old meadow orchard. The scent of meadow herbs and countless meadow flowers fills the air. A dream setting: countless splashes of color shine out of the meadows, interspersed with hedges and bushes. Later, the path runs through the middle of an apple orchard.In the "Garden of the Senses", eleven garden rooms framed by hedges have been created on 15,000 square meters. In addition to the extraordinary flora, visitors will find various themed areas.The Wolfsweg Merzig has been certified by the German Hiking Institute with 62 points.
