Traumschleife Kaltensteinpfad

The forest around the Hoxberg offers steep ascents and descents, local history, history lessons and insights into the geology of our planet. Around the Kaltensteine, two huge stone blocks, we are in the land of myths and legends. According to folklore, there is a huge cave under the stones, in which a great treasure lies hidden and is guarded by dwarves.

The first ascent features historical boundary stones from the time before the French Revolution, when the political map of today's Saarland resembled a patchwork quilt. Surrounded by mighty beech trees, a historic horse trough lies somewhat hidden away.In 1990, 100 hectares of forest on the northern slope of the Hoxberg were destroyed by the hurricanes "Vivian" and "Wiebke". Nature is given free rein on around 10 hectares in the "fairytale forest"

Once the depression has been reached, it's already uphill again. Rocks, dead giant trees, ferns almost two meters high and the smell of rotting wood give the ascent a special charm.

After Zollstock, the trail climbs uphill before reaching the Kaltensteine. This rock formation, geologically speaking a conglomerate rock from the Rotliegend, a mixture of pebbles and sandstone, was formed around 270 million years ago.

On the descent, a forest window offers a very special view of Lebach lying in the valley below and the Schaumberg rising up a little further behind it.
