Description by the author

Half-day tour through the Bliesgau biosphere via the Glan-Blies cycle path and the western Bliesgau heights with cool forest passages and amazing views. The approx. 36 km long cycle tour impresses with the contrasts of the lovely character of the Blies Valley, the wooded mountain ranges between the Blies Valley and the Mandelbach Valley and the magnificent distant views south of Biesingen. The tour is suitable for active cyclists as well as families with children with experienced legs.

The circular tour is marked throughout as the Bliesgau cycle path and starts from the train station in Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen in the direction of the baroque town of Blieskastel on the Saarland cycle path. The initially flat route is easy to cycle, as the cycle path was still an old railroad line until 1991, which led through the idyllic Blies valley landscape into the Bliesgau. In 2000, this was converted into a cycling and hiking trail and opened on May 1st. Along the route to the southernmost point, cyclists will find several places to stop for refreshments in Blieskastel, Herbitzheim and Gersheim. From Gersheim, the route continues directly to the Bliesbruck-Reinheim European Cultural Park, a cross-border archaeological park. This is followed by a single notable ascent from Reinheim of over 150 meters up to the ridge between the Blies valley and the Mandelbach valley. Once at the top, the route follows the pleasantly cool forest for around 8 km, past the Katharinenhof golf course and Celtic burial mounds to the Hölschberg just before Biesingen. After a fantastic descent near Biesingen, orchard landscapes follow down into the "Lange Tal", along the edge of the forest and past paddocks. The village of Blieskastel-Alschbach in the valley follows after approx. 3 km. Here it is worth making a detour to Gut Lindenfels with its organic farm store and the forest café on the Alschbach hill. At the end of the tour, cyclists need to be careful, as a roadside cycle path leads from Alschbach to Lautzkirchen via the local road to the train station in Lautzkirchen.
