Circular route Derenburg Osterholz

Short Description

The comfortable circular hike leads on straight paths through extensive deciduous forests and gently rolling pine forests. The hike surprises with beautiful views from Thyrstein towards Burg and Fortress Regenstein as well as the silhouette of Wernigerode Castle in front of the Harz Brocken mountain range.

Follow the signage for R on the green petal.

The hike starts at Derenburg Market Square. First, cross the main street at the pedestrian crossing, then turn into Petersilienstraße and Promenade. Pass by the shopping market until turning right into Friedenstraße. Follow this road along a tree-lined avenue through Rehtal towards the sports field. Leave the sports fields on your right and follow the comfortable path along the field edge. From here, you have an unobstructed view over the fields towards Halberstadt.

At the shelter, the path leads you into Osterholz, mostly covered with deciduous forest. Many paths are laid out very straight, as if the forest was designed on a drawing board. Cross the forest until near the end, close to Federal Highway B 81. The signage now leads you to the right along the narrowing path. Ahead of you is the steep ascent to Thyrstein on soft ground covered with pine needles. The somewhat hidden, about 20 meters high sandstone rock surprises with a great view of the Regenstein massif and the city of Blankenburg. Additionally, here you will find a bench and a shelter a few steps away inviting for a picnic.

Now, descend towards the forest edge on the west side of Osterholz. From here, you have a clear view of the Harz Mountains with the Brocken and the silhouette of Wernigerode Castle. Another bench with a shelter here is a popular resting spot.

You can enjoy this view again during the hike on a small hill above the fishing pond at the signboard Weg Deutscher Kaiser &: Könige.

The circular hiking trail leaves the pine-covered, gentle hilly landscape through the deciduous forest towards allotment gardens at Hellbach, before going through the city along Gartenstraße and Promenade back to the market square.

There are some free parking spaces at Derenburg Market Square. Additional parking spaces can be found in the side streets.
