1st stage of the Harz Monastery Trail from Goslar to Vienenburg.
Track revision on 8.2.24 Passage through Goslar between the Neuwerk Church and the St. Georg Monastery Ruin.
The diverse 14 km long section of the Monastery Trail starts at the Neuwerk Church, a former monastery church with purely Romanesque architecture from the 12th century and wall paintings from the 13th century. The path then leads out of the gate to the left initially towards the train station, then behind the Hotel Zum Achtermann over a pedestrian bridge to the other side of the street and past the St. Georg Monastery Ruin. The former monastery dates back to the 10th century, but was burned down during the Goslar Unrest in 1527, only fragments of the foundations remain. The trail continues through the extensive districts of Goslar, then through forest and fields with a view of the Brocken. Along the trail in Grauhof, a district of Goslar, lies the baroque St. Georg Monastery Church. It dates back to shortly after 1700, and its significant Treutmann organ was first played in 1737. The last part of this stage runs along an old railway embankment and transforms into an avenue with fruit trees before Wöltingerode. The extensive former nunnery of Wöltingerode, founded in the 12th century and rebuilt in the Baroque style, now houses a comfortable monastery hotel in impressive historical premises as well as a monastery distillery that has been producing high-quality liqueurs since 1682. In good weather during the summer, the Klosterkrug beer garden is open.
