Description

This approximately 12 km long stage offers some hiking challenges that are easily manageable with normal fitness levels. Starting at the Harzer Wandernadel service office and the tourist information center in Blankenburg, after a detour to the Baroque Gardens, you will reach the south-facing path below the Teufelsmauer, a unique geological rock formation. For those who enjoy spectacular paths, you can walk along the Devils Wall ridge instead of following the track.

Continuing on the south-facing path, you will be rewarded with a view of the Hamburger Wappen, another prominent and widely visible rock formation on the outskirts of Timmenrode. After passing through Timmenrode with its 18th-century village church, you will follow field and forest paths until you reach the Eggerode Foresters House. From there, the trail leads all the way to Thale, where the stage destination Wendhusen Monastery is reached. The Carolingian Wendhusen Monastery complex is the oldest in what is now Saxony-Anhalt, dating back to the 9th century. The impressive western wing was built shortly before 1200, and in 1540, the monastery was turned into a manor. Today, the complex is home to the Nordharzer Altertumsgesellschaft e.V., offering lecture series, tours, and traditional archery.
