Short Description

From Bad Sachsa to Wieda, passing by the highest mountain in the South Harz region - the Stöberhai.

Description

At the spa park in Bad Sachsa, just before the Frechdachs, the only student memorial in Germany, the 5th stage of the BaudenSteig begins. The path leads through the wild and romantic Uffetal to the Stöberhai (720 m above sea level), the highest mountain in the South Harz region. The origin of the name is not clear, it is assumed that a charcoal burner named Stöber had his Hai, i.e. his charcoal site, here. The Berghotel Stöberhai with an observation tower was built here in 1889, and numerous guests from Berlin stayed here. In 1980, the hotel fell victim to a major fire. Until 1989, the German army had listening posts installed on the tower at the Stöberhai pointing east. The tower was demolished in 2005. Today, there is a shelter and picnic benches at the Stöberhai. A fantastic view of Sankt Andreasberg, the Wurmberg, and the Brocken rewards you for the ascent. The next destination is Stöberhai station. Although the railway line Walkenried-Braunlage was closed in 1963, a beautiful forest inn is still located in the former station building. After a refreshment, continue to Wieda, located on the river of the same name in a valley surrounded by forests. For those who wish, they can walk another 5 km and stay overnight in Zorge.

Directions

From the center of Bad Sachsa (S) to the spa house and across the small parking lot towards Eulingswiese. A wide forest path leads uphill. Out of the forest, across the parking lot to the Hermann-Löns monument (1). Turn left on the road for a few meters downhill, then continue on the path (trail 5). Turn left onto Kronenbergweg downhill into the Ostertal (2). At the intersection in the valley, hike uphill to the right. Ignore all turn-offs along the Uffe and continue upwards towards Ravensberg. The Uffequelle with a shelter (3) is already visible. Pass the shelter on the right and continue uphill on the Uffequellenweg. The path reaches a junction, turn left here uphill towards Stöberhai. Soon you will reach the Stephanhütte. Heinrich von Stephan was the General Postmaster and inventor of the postcard. Cross the intersection, continue straight on the wide forest path to the Dr. Hampe Hut. Through a windbreak area - now with a great view, all the way to Kyffhäuser. At Lärchenplatz (4) with a shelter, enjoy a beautiful view of the Oderstausee and Bad Lauterberg. From the hut, walk back a short distance (about 20 m) and then continue straight uphill. At the summit of Stöberhai (5), enjoy a beautiful panoramic view all the way to the Brocken. Today, there is a shelter with a terrace and benches at the summit. Hike downhill on the wide forest path, the Nordhäuser Stieg. In the past, the people from Nordhausen used to take the train to Stöberhai station and then hike up to Stöberhai on this path, hence the nickname Nordhäuser Stieg. Past a large wildlife feeding area to the Historic Stöberhai Station (6) (refreshments). Turn right before the bridge. Follow the old railway line of the Walkenried-Braunlage route. Through the idyllic Weinglastal almost to the L601. Just before that, the path turns right. Above the highway, walk on a wide path. Then a few meters on the highway, turn right into the village. At the Wieda town sign, take the next right. At a shelter, turn left onto a meadow path to Bergstraße. Cross it, then cross a bridge and immediately turn left down the steps. Through the spa park to Hotel Krone or continue to the town center (7) and the town hall.
