A well-marked and varied circular hiking trail with scenic and cultural highlights leads around the Helmestausee.

The distant view of the Kyffhäuser Nature Park with forests, adjacent fields, and orchards is magnificent.
The area of the reservoir was flooded in 1969. The reservoir protects the lowland of the Golden Aue from the previously regular floods. The view extends far over the flooded lake. A variety of bird species find breeding and resting places here.

In October/November, numerous cranes rest here on their way south. According to NABU, the section between Berga and Auleben is therefore not accessible from October to December.
