Directions

Oranienbaum – Ferropolis – Goitzsche/Bitterfeld (approx. 43 km)

On the R1 route, you cycle towards Gräfenhainichen until you reach the City of Steel – Ferropolis. Five heavy excavator giants - each with its own history - are presented on a peninsula in the middle of the created Gremminer Lake, covering the desert of a former open-pit mine. From Ferropolis, continue on the COAL | STEAM | LIGHT bike route past the Zschornewitz power plant - a monument of industrial history, through which you will ride through the factory settlement. Until you reach your destination for today - the Goitzsche - you will pass, among others, the Baroque church of Burgkemnitz, the Muldestausee, the book village of Mühlbeck, and the Bernsteinsee. The Great Goitzsche Lake emerged from the former lignite open-pit mine Goitzsche and is now one of the most popular recreational areas in Saxony-Anhalt. A level tower with a sea bridge was built, among other things. The walk across the 200-meter-long sea bridge and the climb up the 26-meter-high tower are rewarded with a fantastic view of the entire region.

 Some World Heritage Card benefits:

Environmental and Nature Conservation Center HAUS AM SEE Schlaitz: Free entry to the exhibition

Book Village Mühlbeck-Friedersdorf: Book voucher worth €15

Wakepark at the Goitzsche: Free wakeboarding or stand-up paddling

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dessau

Today, you will travel on your own to the Bauhaus city of Dessau-Roßlau. If time allows, you can visit Mosigkau Rococo Palace as the first stop on your Garden Dreams Tour today. It is located about 10 km before the city gates and can be reached via the Fürst-Franz Weg. The palace and garden complex are among the last largely preserved Rococo ensembles in Central Germany.

Day 2: Dessau - Oranienbaum (approx. 21 km)

You leave the Bauhaus city of Dessau – Rosslau in a northern direction on the Mulde Cycle Path. At the Jagdbrücke, you will join the Elbe Cycle Path/Fürst-Franz Weg, which you will follow towards Vockerode. After about 8 km, you will reach Vockerode. Leave the Elbe Cycle Path and cycle on the Europe Cycle Path R1 via the Bieberfrei facilities at Auenhaus to Oranienbaum.

Day 3: Oranienbaum - Wörlitz and back (approx. 8 km each way)

At the Catholic Christ the King Church, leave the R1 and cycle north to Wörlitz. Back to Oranienbaum, take the same route (alternatively, you can also take the Dessau-Wörlitz railway back).

Day 4: Oranienbaum - Ferropolis – Goitzsche/Bitterfeld (approx. 43 km)

Leave Oranienbaum on the R1 and cycle to Gremminer See. On a peninsula lies the city of iron – Ferropolis. When leaving the peninsula, you will come across the Coal/Steam/Light cycle path, which will take you past Muldestausee to the Great Goitzscher See. Passing the book village of Mühlbeck Friedersdorf, you will reach the level tower and the sea bridge.

Day 5: Goitzsche/Bitterfeld – Jessnitz – Dessau (approx. 32 km)

Cycle back on the Bernsteinpromenade (approx. 2.2 km) until you turn left onto Straße der Opfer des Faschismus. Here you will meet the Mulde Cycle Path, which will take you back to Dessau.

Day 6: Individual journey home or extension

Today, your bike tour through the garden dreams in the World Heritage region ends.
