The Luther Trail extends across the five federal states of Bavaria, Hesse, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, connecting the reformers places of activity. However, Martin Luthers roots lie in the Mansfeld Land. The Luther Trail, marked with the green L, leads directly through Eisleben, where Luther was born, baptized, and also died.
I am a Mansfeld child...
These words by Martin Luther underline his connection to the Mansfeld Land. Although the Luther Trail extends across the five federal states of Bavaria, Hesse, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, connecting the reformers places of activity, Martin Luthers roots lie in the Mansfeld Land.
The Luther Trail, marked with the green L, leads directly through Eisleben, where Luther was born, baptized, and also died. The Luther memorials in Eisleben, with his birthplace and death house, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Luther spent a significant part of his childhood and youth in Mansfeld, which is now documented in the Luthers Parents House Museum. Excavations of the houses refuse pit provided insights into the eating habits 500 years ago. Not only did field hare and fish appear on the menu, but also songbirds like common whitethroat, yellowhammer, chaffinch, robin, or song thrush.
These species still exist today in the nature and UNESCO Geopark. In their habitats, where beautiful views of the landscape are also offered, the Harz Regional Association has established three nature experience stations and set up information boards. The nature experience stations incorporate elements of the Renaissance. There, and at other points along the Luther Trail through the districts of Mansfeld-Südharz, Harz, and Nordhausen, you can collect the coveted stamps of the Harzer Wandernadel. In 2017, a special edition of the Harzer Wandernadel Luther in the Harz was released for this purpose. The stamp locations accompany you along the way, starting on the Mansfeld Lakes Wine Road, where you will find the first station at the Kalten Stelle in Unterrißdorf. The hunt continues at Mansfeld with a legendary view of Mansfeld Castle, and you will also find various information boards and rest areas in Wippertal. The final stage then leads you through the beautiful beech forests in the South Harz. The highlight of this stage is the Stolberg half-timbered town. A great view of the old town and the castle can be enjoyed from the Luther Beech.
Various entry points, e.g., in Seeburg, Lutherstadt Eisleben, Mansfeld-Lutherstadt, Wippra, or Stolberg
