Covering 410 km, the Luther Trail runs through many equally special landscapes and culturally significant regions of Saxony-Anhalt, passing by the Romanesque Road, unique parks and gardens, and diverse rivers and lakes that traverse Saxony-Anhalt like a Blue Ribbon. In Bad Düben, the Luther Trail connects to the Saxon part. Stolberg (Harz) serves as the junction point to Thuringia, continuing on to Bavaria and Hesse from there.
As a circular route, the Luther Trail can be started from any point along the way. Our suggested stages start in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, following the northern route on well-known cycling paths to Lutherstadt Eisleben and into the Harz, then looping back towards Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Höhnstedt.
In addition to its tourist attractions, the Luther Trail also offers a high religious and spiritual potential. Churches and other sites along the way highlight Luthers work on-site, and various spiritual offerings can be experienced.
The individual Luther sites in Saxony-Anhalt can also be explored very well by bike. Instead of following the pilgrimage route, nearby cycling paths can be used. Starting from Wittenberg on the Elbe Cycle Path, passing through Coswig (Anhalt) and Wörlitz to Dessau-Roßlau, then switching to the Fläming Cycle Path through Zerbst to Walternienburg, before rejoining the Elbe Cycle Path. This path continues briefly to the small town of Aken, a junction point with the EuroVelo R1 cycle route. This route can be followed westward to Köthen and Bernburg. The Saale Cycle Path connects the two river towns of Bernburg (Saale) and Halle (Saale). A short detour on the Saale-Harz Cycle Path leads to Lutherstadt Eisleben and Mansfeld. Returning to Halle (Saale), the only section without a signposted cycle path heads east through southern Anhalt. Despite a noticeable elevation, we recommend taking a tour to Petersberg before heading through rural areas to Bitterfeld and the Great Goitzsche Lake. Bitterfeld is once again a hub for several regional cycle routes such as the Goitzsche Lake Circular Route, the Coal | Steam | Light Cycle Route, or the Mulde Cycle Path. The latter leads to the nearby spa town of Bad Schmiedeberg. From there, the Berlin-Leipzig cycle path leads through the Dübener Heide to the last significant Luther site in Kemberg, and finally back to Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
