Short Description

Friedwald – Dwarves Holes – Sachsenstein Hut (stamp 166) – Historical Gypsum Kiln (stamp 192) – In the Meadow Valley – Train Station – Bad Sachsa – Friedwald

Description

This easy hike passes by the fishing ponds at Blumenberg, through the ruins of Sachsenburg and the Dwarves Holes up to Sachsenstein with the Sachsenstein Hut. The path then descends to the Loren Memorial and the Historical Gypsum Kiln in Neuhof. From here, the trail continues through Wiesengund towards the train station. From there, its just a short sunny walk through the fields to Mönchslede in Bad Sachsa and back to the starting point via Walkenrieder Straße.

Route Description

The starting and ending point for this easy, approximately 7 km long hike is the parking lot at Friedwald between Bad Sachsa and Walkenried. From here, you walk once across the L 604 state road on the hiking trail marked with 32R, passing the beautifully quiet fishing ponds at Blumenberg. The path then leads to the ruins of Sachsenburg. The exact year of construction of Sachsenburg is not documented, only first mentioned in the Hersfeld Annals in 1073. The castle could not have stood for long, at most around 10 years, as it was already demolished in 1074. Starting from Sachsenburg, you continue on trail 32R and cross the tracks of the German Railways – Nordhausen – Göttingen line at the railway crossing specially created for hikers. Along the Dwarves Holes, the path now slowly ascends to Sachsenstein Hut. Here, you have a beautiful view over the Harz foothills towards the Neuhof district. Additionally, this is where you find the first stamp of the Harzer Wandernadel (HWN), with number 166, for todays tour. From Sachsenstein Hut, you then descend past the Loren Memorial and turn right at the DGH towards the Historical Gypsum Kiln, the second stamp location of the tour with number 192. From now on, its mostly flat towards Bad Sachsa through the meadow valley, partly on the Neuhöfer Circular Trail No. 7 and past the train station. From there, the path back to the starting point is alongside the fields and easy to walk.
