Short description

The Bergwitzsee stands for the transformation of a coal mining area into a recreational landscape. It is the touristic flagship of the town of Kemberg with a modern camping and water sports site, and a circular path that partly leads over hilly hiking trails, where bikes must be pushed, but this effort is rewarded by the great view.

Description

A tour of the cycling region Dübener Heide

Route: Kemberg - Bergwitz - Campground - Bergwitzsee-Ring - Reuden - Kemberg:

Difficulty Easy to Medium, Family-friendly, approx. 18 km

Directions

From the historic town hall in Kemberg, the starting point of this family-friendly tour, take the road to the district of Bergwitz, which is reached after crossing the B100. In Bergwitz, turn left behind the Netto market and follow the paved path to Bergwitzsee. Bergwitzsee has its origins in the beginnings of coal mining. Here stood the most modern conveyor bridge in Europe. It was honored at the end of the 1930s with the highest award for the best coal and most efficient extraction. In Ukraine, a conveyor bridge is said to still be operating in a lignite open-cast mine that started operating in the Bergwitz open-cast mine in 1932. Today, the 180-hectare lake offers a wide range of leisure activities: swimming, surfing, sailing, paddling, fishing, and diving.

Upon arrival at Bergwitzsee, turn right onto the cycle path Berlin-Leipzig, which later also corresponds to the Europe Cycle Route R1. Always in view of the lakeshore, this tour leads to the campground and water sports site, which also offers a gastronomic offer for cyclists. Here, the Bergwitzsee circular path begins (marked by a yellow dot). Halfway, you reach Hoffmannshöhe, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the lake and, in good weather, all the way to Wittenberg. Further along, you pass the dragonfly pond, where you can observe a beaver at work with a bit of luck. The tour continues on the Bergwitzsee-Ring until you reach the cycle path Berlin-Leipzig again. Follow this path to the right into the village of Reuden and from there continue to the city center of Kemberg. At the end of the tour, you can reward yourself with ice cream or coffee and cake at Eiscafé Adam in Kemberg Market
