Salt Street - Along old trade routes

Short description

On this route you cycle along the old salt road through Saxony-Anhalt. It used to connect the saltworks in the area, places where salt mining was carried out, and at the same time served as major trading places.

Description

The Salt Road Cycle Path in Saxony-Anhalt leads through the south of the country, from the state border with Saxony at Horburg-Maßlau via Merseburg to Lake Geiseltal, through Mücheln, Nebra, the Wangen, the site of the Nebra Sky Disc on the Mittelberg, and through the Ziegelrodaer Forest to Allstedt near Sangerhausen. This Salt Road Cycle Path is approximately 90 km long.

Route description

The route leads from the Saxon state border through the Saale-Elster floodplain to the cathedral city of Merseburg. Further on to the Geiseltal and the eponymous lake, a former lignite opencast mine that has developed into the largest artificial inland lake in Germany through flooding.

The Salt Road leads via Mücheln and Steigra to the Unstrut and uses the Unstrut Cycle Path between Karsdorf and Wangen. Continuing on to Nebra and Wangen, you pass by the visitor center Arche Nebra and the site of the Nebra Sky Disc on the Mittelberg. Then through the Ziegelrodaer Forest to Allstedt.

A road-side cycle path leads to the nearby Oberröblingen. From there, a path leads to the rose city of Sangerhausen, or you can follow the Harzvorland Cycle Path via Tilleda with Kaiserpfalz, Kelbra, Berga and connect to the Harz Circular Path at Uftrungen.

Horburg-Maßlau - Dölkau - Zweimen - Zöschen - Wallendorf - Luppenau - Merseburg - Beuna - Frankleben - north of Braunsbedra, south of Lake Geiseltal - Mücheln - Albersroda - Schnellroda - Kalzendorf - Steigra - Karsdorf - Reinsdorf - Nebra - Wangen - visitor center Arche Nebra - Mittelberg - Hermannseck - Ziegelroda - Landgrafenroda - Allstedt.
