Thale - Timmenrode - Blankenburg
This hike leads from the former Wendhusen Abbey, a canoness foundation from the year 825, from Thale via Timmenrode along the Devils Wall to Blankenburg, whose castle once served as a secondary residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. After crossing Blankenburg, you will reach the Michaelstein Abbey on the northwestern outskirts of the city.
The starting point of this tour is the Wendhusen Abbey in the old town of Thale, the oldest monastery foundation in the new federal states. From here, follow the signs for Kloster Michaelstein (marked with a red-brown cross) through the city (Breite Weg, Markt, Rosstrappenstraße, Schwalbenklink, and Rübchen) to the district of Benneckenrode. Continue on hiking trail E 11 (marked with a white cross / blue dot) to Eggerode and then to Timmenrode.
At the Hamburger Wappen, you will reach the western section of the Devils Wall between Timmenrode and Blankenburg. Here, you can choose between the more beautiful but strenuous ridge path and the easier-to-walk southern slope path. Just before Blankenburg, you will reach the Großvater, which offers a magnificent view. The path then leads downhill into Blankenburg and straight on over the federal highway B 81.
You will pass Schnappelberg, the small castle, through Marktstraße, over the market, past the town hall, further through Harzstraße, and turn right at an intersection into Welfenstraße. Continue to Rübeländer Straße (B 27) and uphill to the junction of Rhodenbergstraße / Eichenberg. In Eichenbergweg, follow the white cross / blue dot markings past an allotment garden and a holiday home development, then pass under the railway line Blankenburg / Rübeland.
The path continues past the Schäferlinde (natural monument) and the Teufelsbad spa clinic, where you will reach the Michaelstein Abbey founded in the 12th century following the Klosterbach. Within its walls, there is a collection of musical instruments from past centuries as well as a music academy.
