The bike tour leads through the recreational area Gommern-Dannigkow-Plötzky-Pretzien, characterized by numerous quarry lakes.
There are 26 lakes here, some of them on this tour.
We are in a landscape conservation area. Numerous quarry lakes in and around Gommern invite you to linger, but also to cycle. The lakes are crystal clear and are on average 20-30m deep. Birches and pines as well as massive rocks are reflected in them. In this beautiful recreational area, you will cycle about 18km past 11 out of 26 of these quarry lakes. You can admire the Rock Garden, the largest outdoor rock exhibition in Germany, and enjoy absolute tranquility. The tour starts and ends at the historic Wasserburg Gommern.
This circular tour runs in sections on the Börderadweg and the Klusdamm cycle path. It is recommended to switch to the Elberadweg at the Waldesruh junction.
In and around Gommern, as the former city of quarry workers, there are numerous quarry lakes in the current landscape conservation area, which originated from mining closures and quarries. The lakes are crystal clear and are on average 20-30m deep. Birches and pines as well as massive rocks are reflected in them. We will get to know 11 out of the 26 lakes on our approximately 13 km long lake tour. The wonderful location between forests, lakes, and untouched nature offers an excellent opportunity for recreation - whether on foot or by bike.
The starting point of our lake tour around Gommern is the Wasserburg Gommern. Today, the more than 1000-year-old Wasserburg houses a hotel, an inn, and a brewery. We move away from the castle towards the Rock Garden - on the trail of the stones that will accompany us on our entire bike tour. Opened in 1995, the Rock Garden is now the largest of its kind in Germany with over 245 exhibits outdoors. We leave the Rock Garden behind and after about 1.8km, we reach the Heinrichstal Lake (1.5ha). On the bike path towards the next lake on our tour, the Königs-See (7800m²), just 1.2 km away, we are on a section of the Börde cycle path. We continue on this path to the Kolumbus-See (10,000m²). The Kolumbus-See demonstrably changes its water level by 3cm annually. This should not bother us here and today, as we continue cycling to the Edersee, the Gieselasee, and the Waldsee. From the Waldsee, we head west to the AWG See 1, 2, and 3 to the Neue Mühle. Here, there is a horse farm for those interested. Continuing on the Klusdamm cycle path, we reach the Forsthaus Vogelsang. Here, along the way, you will find an old oven. On the Alte Heizstrecke as the locals call it, we head back to Gommern. The goal of the bike tour is once again the Wasserburg with its unique location.
