Short Description

Starting from the historical brickworks in Hundisburg, the pedal rider will experience humanitys history in a literal sense on the circuit around Haldensleben. The route passes by local sights and offers many opportunities for picnicking, dining, and even swimming. One kilometer on this route represents 100,000 years of human history. Along the way, small panels with key data of our history since the appearance of the first human-like beings 4 million years ago can be discovered. Matching the main events, life-sized wooden figures line the path from time to time. The huge uneventful periods at the beginning of our development and the breathtaking acceleration of events in the recent past become noticeable.
This cycling route consciously does not aim to be an educational trail with detailed information boards. It is intended to stimulate reflection on the origin and future of the human species on this planet while cycling by, during an active nature experience.

Description

The route mostly leads through forest areas passing by regional sights. The paths are mainly natural forest and farm roads. In the towns of Haldensleben, Uthmöden, and Bülstringen, the route continues on district roads or roadsides with cycle paths.

Route Description

1st Section: Hundisburg – Haldensleben:

Starting from the brickworks, turn right towards Hundisburg. Ahead of you lies Hundisburg Castle, which we recommend visiting at the end of your tour. Before the bridge that crosses the Beber, turn left and ride through the western corner of the famous Haldensleben/Hundisburg landscape park. You will soon leave this area and continue straight ahead past a forest house. You will find our 1st data point at a forest educational board. Continue straight ahead through an old avenue towards Neu-Haldensleben. Cross the old military road (current Lindenallee), pass through a valley, and reach our 2nd data point on a hill. Turn right here (facing Haldensleben), passing the former swimming pool and reaching the southern outskirts of Haldensleben: the Mittelland Canal and the new marina. Cross the canal bridge and barriers to reach the 3rd data point in the center of Haldensleben. Whether you visit the many sights of this lovely town (historic old town center, Roland on horseback, museum, Bülstringer Tower, St. Marys Church, and more) now, at the end of your tour, or another time, is entirely up to you.

2nd Section: Haldensleben – Lübberitz:

Pass by the marketplace (with the only Roland on horseback in Germany) and the Stendal Gate, and head out of town (roundabout) towards Satuelle. At the waterworks, turn right uphill into the forest towards the 4th data point. At a large intersection, the cycle path continues straight ahead, but you can take a short detour to the left to the Powder Tower. Back on the main path, after a long, gradual ascent, you reach the 5th data point. Shortly after, you reach the highest point in the extensive pine forests: then your bike will roll on its own on a straight path north towards Lübberitz. However, at the first fork, a detour to the right to a large boulder, the Krengelstein, is possible. After crossing a small canal back onto the main path, you reach the Lübberitz forest rangers lodge, next to a forest beekeeping facility where you can enrich your picnic basket.

3rd Section: Lübberitz – Uthmöden:

Shortly after Lübberitz, turn left at the first intersection onto a long straight sand path through a pine forest in a northwesterly direction until you reach a larger intersection. Turn left here, and after 50 meters, you will reach the 6th data point with a magnificent view from the forest to the fields, meadows, and pastures between Satuelle and Dorst. From here, you can already see a forest island in the middle of the fields: this is where the legendary Linderburg castle was located, the seat of a robber knight lineage. Crossing the fields after a long straight ride, first in a southwestern, then in a western direction, you will reach the village of Uthmöden, where you can stop for the first time.

4th Section: Uthmöden – Bülstringen:

At the church in Uthmöden, continue straight ahead, leaving the main street and the village. After a sharp right turn, stay on the district road, cross the bridge over the Ohre, and reach our 7th data point at an information board about the local nature reserve. Just before the new bridge over the Mittelland Canal, turn left onto a beautiful rest area directly by the canal. Along the canal bank, youll reach the boat harbor of Bülstringen, and from there, over the new canal bridge to Bülstringen (opportunity for dining).

5th Section: Bülstringen – Süplingen

From Bülstringen, take Zernitzer Weg to a riding stable. From there, continue in a straight western direction on an agricultural path through vast fields. Shortly after entering the forest, you will come across the picturesque Zernitz estate nestled in the woods. Pass under the railway tracks and arrive at another lovely rest area by the Zernitzer Waldsee. Turn right uphill into the forest on a winding path to our 8th data point at a forest educational board. Turning left out of the forest, youll again enjoy a wide view over the fields from Süplingen to the loading port of Haldensleben/Bülstringen. Halfway to Süplingen, under a mighty oak tree, you will find the 9th data point. Upon reaching Süplingen, you can take a refreshing dip in the two locally renowned quarry lakes and/or dine at the village or lakeside restaurant. Near the second (lower) quarry lake, youll find our 10th data point.

6th Section: Süplingen – Klausort:

Coming from the second (valley-located) quarry lake, head southeast into the forest, passing by the Süplingen sports field to the Eiche forest lodge. Turn left here, cross the railway tracks, and circle a dreamy forest pond. You are now entering the so-called historical square mile of Haldensleben, a collection of megalithic tombs, which are uniquely dense in Europe. Shortly after the forest pond, turn left towards the most famous of these megalithic tombs: the Küchentannengrab, where youll find our 11th data point. Uphill and past two more graves, cross a small forest intersection and finally reach a large forest path. Turn left here and then right at the next fork. Shortly after, at a forest edge, youll reach a junction with an old milestone. Turn left here (back into the forest) in a northeast direction until you reach our 12th data point under a strong oak tree. From there, its only about 100 meters to Klausort on B 245, where a restaurant invites you for a final stop.

7th Section: Klausort – Hundisburg:

From Klausort, embark on the final section of your journey: crossing B 245 in a southeast direction towards Hundisburg. At the entrance to the old military road (current Lindenallee), youll find the 12th data point. From here on, these will appear more frequently and therefore are not described further. Where the military road makes a left curve, our cycle path continues straight ahead. A detour to a picturesque forest lake is worth it to the right, a bit further youll find the Nonnenspring and an information board about the Wichmannsburg. Back on the main path, there is a short uphill stretch, then youll ride on an old avenue across the fields towards Hundisburg. Upon reaching the outskirts at the forest house, turn right onto the final stretch towards the brickworks. Another 100 meters, and you have completed your journey through 4 million years of human history.
