Description by the author

Short description

Follow the river Elbe through old hardwood floodplain forest and along remaining softwood floodplain.

Description

For more than 25 years, WWF Germany has been active in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. The Middle Elbe office protects and renatures alluvial forest and creates floodpplains.

Directions

The WWF Tour opens and ends with a wide view of the Elbe. At the starting point at the Kornhaus, don't miss the bird diversity on the protected river banks. Soon you will reach the heart and core zone of the Middle Elbe nature reserve between Mulde and Saale. You will visit one of the last large alluvial forests in Europe and discover an uncultivated forest in all of its natural beauty. Wild, romantic, old oaks line the path. Here you will find traces of typical meadow animals such as the middle woodpecker, the beaver and the endangered stcack beetle. After a short time the dense forest clears and the wiede Elbe view is baclk. Biking between colourful meadows and extensively cultivated fields, you will hear the skylark chirping excitedly and maybe the osprey circling above you. On the well-paved and consistently flat paths, you will experience the last remaining softwood meadows and the meadow-specific biodiversity preserved here up close. Make a short detour to the inland dune and follow the path further into the next section of forest. The tour ends as promised with another fantastic view of the Elbe.

Safety guidelines

You are in the core zone of the Mittelebe nature reserve between Mulde and Saale. The protection of the threatened flora and fauna is possible with your help. The paths indicated here must not be left. The beaches are particularly attractive, but should only be admired from the path, as these are important breeding grounds and ensure the survival of the rare little ringed plover.
