Description

This relatively short circular hiking trail leads along a section of the approximately 30-kilometer-long Teufelsmauerstieg, passing by the most striking part of the bizarre sandstone formation between Weddersleben and Warnstedt. Along a length of two kilometers, the Königstein, the Mittelsteine, and the Papensteine are lined up.

Route Description

The starting point of this circular hike is the Teufelsmauer parking lot at the Bodebrücke between Weddersleben and Neinstedt, where you follow the Teufelsmauer signposts (marked with a devil symbol).

Shortly after, the path leads uphill to the right, passing the Teufelsmauergarten on the left, where the remarkable flora of the Teufelsmauer, protected since 1852, and its surrounding area has been planted.

After a short ascent, you reach the Teufelsmauer with the Königsstein. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the forested Harz edge, the northern Harz foothills, and the village of Weddersleben to the north. A wooden staircase leads back down the path, passing by the Mittelsteine. At the end of the path, you reach the paved Thalenser Chaussee, where you turn right after a few meters and ascend gently to the Papensteine.

Following the path along the stones, you will soon reach an asphalted agricultural road, where you follow the signs to Thale / Neinstedt (marked with a Kaiserkrone symbol) to the left. Upon reaching the outskirts of Thale, it is recommended to visit the Wendhusen Monastery, located around 500 meters away, which has an interesting history.

The return to the starting point of the hike (Teufelsmauer parking lot) follows the hiking trail along the Bode River, signposted towards Neinstedt / Weddersleben.
