The Fuhne is a lowland stream in the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, which is unique due to its bifurcation connecting the two Elbe tributaries Mulde and Saale. Like a green ribbon, the Fuhne floodplain runs through the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld. The Fuhne cycle path offers a diverse flora and fauna: floodplain forests, marshes, and ponds are integrated into various nature reserves and the landscape protection area Fuhneaue.
A tour along the Fuhne is best started from Jeßnitz. There is much to discover in the cities as well, such as the Industry and Film Museum in Wolfen with its fascinating exhibition on the development and production of photo and cinema films. Visitors embark on an exciting journey through industrial history. In Zörbig, one can explore the traces of the Wettin Princes. Over 1,000 years ago, the castle with the tower built in the 13th century was owned by the Wettins and was always maintained so that the sovereign could stay here.
Following the cycle path, it is worth visiting the counterfeiting in Radegast. No one denies that over 200 years ago, a pharmacist eagerly minted Prussian Groschen due to a lack of money. This incident caused quite a stir and is now tangible in a counterfeiting experience. Ornithologists will particularly enjoy Cösitz due to the variety of birds, leading to the designation of the 38 ha Cösitzer Teiche nature reserve. Also worth seeing is the former manor with a castle and a magnificent park, surrounded by the remains of a Slavic castle wall.
At the northern edge of the village Schortewitz, there is a 6.8 m long and 4,000 BC built megalithic tomb made of granite and gneiss blocks. It is the southernmost of its kind in Germany. The route continues to the town of Gröbzig. The small town on the Fuhne is charmingly surrounded by idyllic Fuhne floodplains. Coming by bike, one can already see the towns landmark, the castle tower, from a distance. The 36 m high tower is also called the Mouse Tower colloquially. Thieves used to be imprisoned here for stealing. Unique in the German-speaking world is the ensemble of the Synagogue Museum Gröbzig, consisting of a synagogue, Jewish school, community center, and cemetery. From here, the Fuhne cycle path continues to Bernburg, where the Fuhne flows into the Saale.
