Lower town, upper town, and many sights
Start your walk from the tourist information office at the train station in Burg and stroll leisurely through the historic Goethepark, which was newly designed as part of the Landesgartenschau 2018. Passing by the art figure Hans Meynhardt and Wild Boars and the magnificent villas of the city (in the cloister), you reach the vineyard, the highest elevation and oldest point of the city Burg. Together with the Goethepark and the Flickschupark, it is part of Saxony-Anhalts touristic route Gartenträume. Unmissable here is the 46-meter-high water tower (14), which, with the coat of arms of Burg, shapes the silhouette. From here, you can let your gaze wander over the Ihle river and the city.
The circular route leads you further to Hainstraße, passing by the historic tannery (12) and the adjacent, crooked Hochständerhaus. In this, once the longest street in Burg, up to eight tanneries were established. The historic tannery is part of the Salzige Tour of the Elbe-Börde-Heide region. Here you can learn everything about the development of the tanning craft. Next door you will find the Ihlegärten.
The next sights are closely together in the so-called Upper Town (Old Town). Here stands the Town Hall (16) directly in front of the church Unser Lieben Frauen (21). It can be recognized from afar by its church towers, a landmark of the city and part of Saxony-Anhalts touristic route Straße der Romanik. Opposite the Town Hall is the figure of the Drummer of Burg (15). It recalls the old Burger legend.
With brisk steps, you walk along the city wall from the Witch Tower (17) to the Cow Tower (18). The Witch Tower got its name during the witch hunts when the alleged witches were locked up there. From here, you continue to Berliner Straße, where the oldest documented house in the city, the Brigitte Reimann City Library (19), is located. Make sure to take a look at the black kitchen here! Also in this street is the Berlin Gate Tower (23). It dates back to the 14th century and is part of the former 2nd Burg city fortification.
On your way, along the Berlin Promenade, you will find the memorial site of the Prussian general and military theorist Carl von Clausewitz (22) nearby. Arriving at the idyllic Flickschupark, let the tranquility of the pond of the same name take effect on you. Take a break here under the old plane tree avenue. The circular route then leads you through the shopping streets (Markt and Schartauer Straße). In the immediate vicinity of the shopping street, you will find the former brewery (9), Germanys oldest continuously operated cinema - the Burg Theater (5), and the 5.60-meter-tall Burger Roland de Ries (8) on Rolandplatz. It has always stood as a symbol of city rights and civil liberties. Not far away, you reach the church of St. Petri (10) and the Huguenot cabinet (10). The church of St. Petri is the oldest sacred building in the city.
Your historical walk through Burg finally leads you back through the Goethepark to the train station. However, taking a small detour in the Goethepark, you can still reach the memorial sites (3) for the fallen of the first and second world wars, as well as the listed Russian tank.
