Border experiences in the Four-Country Corner
The Green Belt, once the inner-German border and death strip, is now an area full of life, where nature, culture, and history strike a harmonious chord. This symbiosis is particularly evident at the intersection of the Elbe, Altmark, and Wendland. Here, in the Four-Country Corner, the federal states of Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt meet. With diverse landscapes where endangered animal and plant species find a protected habitat, the area shaped by the natural course of the Elbe river is a paradise for nature lovers.
You can explore the Green Belt on foot, by bike, or canoe. Signposted border experience points draw visitors attention to special features in nature, culture, and history along the approximately 172-kilometer-long Four-Country Border Cycle Path. Whether its rare habitats, plants or animals, remnants of Slavic settlements, or relics of the German division like border towers and razed villages: impressions or border experiences that have a lasting impact on the soul.
After passing Barnebeck and Henningen, you will reach Klein Grabenstedt after a few kilometers. From Hestedt, follow the former light trace of the border to the border crossing point of Bergen an der Dumme. The cycle path leads through the typical old Altmark villages of Darsekau and Seebenau, then past a very beautiful forest area - the Seebener Holz. After crossing the Dumme, you will see the Luckauer Holz to the east, which then transitions to the Blütinger Holz to the south. The Four-Country Border Cycle Path continues via Hoyersburg to Salzwedel, where cyclists can experience the Salzwedel City Forest, one of the largest alder marsh forests in Germany, right outside the gates of the Hanseatic city. The tranquility and serenity of the landscape characterize the further course over Ritze across the former border to Volzendorf and Schmarsau, then back to the Altmark to Schrampe, Arendsee, and Ziemendorf. Passing through Bömenzien and Aulosen, you reach the former location of Stresow, where the cycle path intersects with the border and nature experience trail. It is recommended to make detours to the two nature experience areas along the Green Belt, the Brietzer Teiche and the Wirler Spitze. Those who wish to explore the Elbe-Aland lowland at the end of the tour in Stresow can do so easily on the app-guided Auentour. Simply download the StadtLandElbe app for free.
