Hike in the footsteps of Heinrich Heine from Ilsenburg to the Brocken.
This ascent to the Brocken starts in Ilsenburg and follows the traces of Heinrich Heine along the mountain stream Ilse. Along winding forest paths, it goes through the deeply cut Ilsetal past the Ilsestein to the impressive Ilsefälle. Primeval beech forests and rugged rock formations line the way. The Heine monument commemorates the poets ascent of the Brocken in 1824. Soon the path turns westward and meets the Harzer Grenzweg at the Hermannsklippe. This leads on the former Kolonnenweg - past the Bismarckklippe and the Kleiner Brocken (1,019 m) - steeply upwards to the treeless Brocken summit. This section of the path offers, as a reward for the steep ascent, a magnificent view of the Eckertalsperre and the northern edge of the Harz mountains.
