The Hanseatic city of Havelberg is a jewel among German small towns, one can feel the past of the Hanseatic League in its medieval alleys as well as on the cathedral hill and is brought back to the present in the House of the Rivers. After visiting the city and the museum in the House of the Rivers, we set off, cycling upstream along the Elbe river past the dikes, forests, and heathlands to the birthplace of the Chancellor of the German Empire and supporter of a federal state Otto von Bismarck in Schönhausen on the Elbe. We can visit the small Bismarck Museum and relax in the park of the destroyed castle.
We continue to the famous Jerichow Monastery, which takes us back into the past once again. The museum and the church are very impressive.
The Elbe Cycle Route is very well signposted and hard to miss.
The route initially leads us along the roads through the low-lying landscape of the Elbe from Havelberg to Klietz and further to Lübars.
Through Hohengöhren, we reach Schönhausen on the Elbe via dike paths and farm roads.
From Schönhausen, we continue following the Elbe under the bridge of the federal road through traffic-free streets to Jerichow.
