On one of the very few triangular city squares in Europe, at the intersection of old Hanseatic trade routes, lies the venerable Gardelegen Town Hall, the seat of the city administration. The Eagle Fountain and the Roland statue redesigned according to old patterns remind us of the centuries-old history of the city. Turning left from Roland, you will see two of the numerous half-timbered houses - the German House and the Lotsche-House - with their remarkable architectural decorations. Now leave the Town Hall Square towards Nicolaistraße. On the way along Nicolaistraße towards the ramparts, you will pass by more interesting citizen houses, the old district court, and St. Nicholas Church. More historical sights are waiting for you...

Directions

On one of the very few triangular city squares in Europe, at the intersection of old Hanseatic trade routes, lies the venerable Gardelegen Town Hall, the seat of the city administration. The Eagle Fountain and the Roland statue redesigned according to old patterns remind us of the centuries-old history of the city.

Turning left from Roland, you will see two of the numerous half-timbered houses - the German House and the Lotsche-House - with their remarkable architectural decorations. Now leave the Town Hall Square towards Nicolaistraße. On the way along Nicolaistraße towards the ramparts, you will pass by more interesting citizen houses and the old district court.

Behind St. Nicholas Church, enter the Wallanlagen Garden Dreams and turn left. Walk along the avenue passing by the animal enclosure and remnants of the old city wall until you reach the Salzwedeler Gate. Admire the massive bastions and the beautiful stepped gable on its show side.

Continuing along Lindenallee, you will pass by the moat and after a short time, the former Magdeburg city gate. Just across, the Gardelegen Shooting House invites you to linger.

Following the path for a short distance past Lindenhofgarten, a very popular event location, and the Harbigsportplatz, we turn left, passing by the vaccination center/branch office of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, and arrive at our final destination, St. Marien Church.

Travel Information

The Hanseatic city of Gardelegen is located on the federal highways B 71 and B188, which intersect directly at the city center. The rail connection for public transport is provided by the train stations in the districts of Gardelegen, Jävenitz, Solpke, Mieste, and Miesterhorst. An airfield with the status of special airfield is located on the outskirts of the city center.
