Wettiner Weg: Around the Petersberg

Short Description

The Wettin Way is a new cultural experience route that leads to the origins of one of the most important European noble families. The rise of the Wettins began in the 10th century in the region between the Saale and Mulde rivers. Many testimonies from the early days, including the ancestral castle in Wettin, have been preserved to this day. In later centuries, other significant buildings were erected. In addition to two major interconnected cycling routes, there are also small half-day tours that lead to some highlights around Petersberg.

Description

Wallwitz train station is a good starting point for a 20 km half-day tour around Petersberg. Its magical summit can be seen from various perspectives throughout the entire tour. From Wallwitz, the route initially leads towards Trebitz and then ascends on a lightly trafficked road to Petersberg. From there, it continues along secondary roads and paved agricultural roads to Kaltenmark and further to Krosigk with its old manor house and the well-known excursion inn Wassermühle. It then gently descends on well-built agricultural roads through Trebitz to Sylbitz with its impressive Romanesque choir tower church. Easy-to-ride agricultural roads continue to Dachritz and past the small medieval village church of Merkewitz, returning to the starting point.

Except for the short ascent towards Petersberg, the route does not pose any special challenges and can be recommended even to less athletic cyclists. With attractive stops such as the zoo and museum in Petersberg or the Wassermühle in Krosigk, it is also suitable for family outings.
