The main route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route covers around 370 km and passes well-known places such as Wiblingen, Ochsenhausen, Bad Schussenried, Weingarten and Biberach as well as Baroque gems. However, all the sights have one thing in common: they are definitely worth a visit!
From the highest church tower in the world - Ulm Minster, the richly decorated library hall in Wiblingen Monastery, past Großlaupheim Castle and the monastery church in Gutenzell-Hürbel, via one of the most beautiful market squares in southern Germany in Biberach, you reach Rot an der Rot on your journey via Ochsenhausen with its Benedictine imperial abbey, where a view of the monastery in the background already gives you a glimpse of the Alps.
The landscape slowly changes as you travel from the gently rolling hills of Upper Swabia near Bad Wurzach to the Württemberg Allgäu in the foothills of the Alps. Along the way, visitors can expect to see the magnificently decorated New Castle in Kißlegg, St. Martin's Church in Argenbühl and the already Mediterranean-style old town of Wangen. Achberg Castle and the New Tettnang Castle are impressive and make you forget that you are still in Germany. In fact, the closer you get through the orchards to Lake Constance near Langenargen, the more the region seems like a piece of northern Italy.
An organ concert in Weingarten Basilica, the museum quarter and the towers in Ravensburg and a visit to the Blood Ride in Weingarten make it clear how tangible culture is in Upper Swabia. In Bad Waldsee, the town lake with the twin towers of St. Peter's Church dominate the townscape, in Aulendorf the unified building of castle and church can be seen from afar and in the Grüner Baum in Bad Waldsee you can enjoy exquisite baroque dishes. The library hall in the Kloster Schussenried, the pilgrimage church in Steinhausen and the parish church of St. Katharina in Wolfegg are certainly outstanding in their magnificent decor. At Oberschwäbisches Museumsdorf Kürnbach, you can immerse yourself in the world of the Baroque from the perspective of ordinary people.
Aulendorf welcomes guests with Countess Paula in an ensemble of castle and church and in Altshausen the baroque castle complex is impressive. In Riedlingen, the Weilerberg Chapel is well worth a visit. Further along the route, two beautiful churches await in Oberstadion and Munderkingen before you can experience the combination of beer and Baroque in Zwiefalten and Ehingen.
But the smaller towns along the main route also invite you to linger with their Upper Swabian hospitality.
