Hohenwittlingensteig

The Hohenwittlingensteig takes us on a journey back in time. On the almost seven-kilometre circular hiking trail, we experience orchards, shady forests, visit ruins and caves and hike through impressive gorges.

The Hohenwittlingensteig is one of our five premium hiking trails Grafensteige, which lead our hiking guests to the natural beauty of the Swabian Alb biosphere area. The tour promises many highlights over a short distance and is a little insider tip, even for experienced Bad Urach hikers.At the start of the tour, hikers can expect a leisurely walk through the Wittlinger orchards to Geschlitzter Fels. We enjoy the fresh alpine air and the tranquillity of the Alb plateau. This is followed by a steep climb from Geschlitzter Fels to the ruins of Hohenwittlingen Castle. There we enjoy a great view from the Rauchiger Fels over the hilly landscape of the Swabian Alb and the upper Erms Valley. If you want, you can stop for a snack at the foot of the ruins and grill your sausages at the barbecue area there.

The route continues to the mysterious Schillerhöhle cave, where Rulaman fans in particular will get their money's worth. Another highlight of the tour is the lush green Wolfsschlucht gorge with a mostly dry watercourse, which you also hike through via an almost alpine-looking short metal staircase. In the damp gorge, which is pleasantly cool even in summer, you can marvel at the impressive sinter terraces formed by mineral deposits.
