Hits for cycling kids on the Neckar Valley cycle path
So that it doesn't get boring on the family trip, here are the "Hits for kids" along the route
- Lamparter Park | Lauffen am Neckar
Diverse playgrounds and direct water access at the mouth of the Zaber in a small park with shady picnic areas. Here you can "walk on water" and splash around with your feet in the shallow water.
- Rathauspark | Nordheim
A short detour to the town center with a water playground in a small park. While the accompanying adults can chill out under the shady trees, the kids have lots of fun in and around the water playground. There is a wine bar & café in the town hall cellar. - NeckarBoot & Kaffeebucht | Heilbronn
2x a small city beach directly on the Neckar with catering, for a longer rest with the barbecue donut across the Neckar. Please note: No swimming in the Neckar, but the Neckarhalde outdoor pool is right next door. - experimenta | Heilbronn
Germany's largest science center with an extra floor for children aged 3 and over - Neckaruferpark in the former BUGA grounds| Heilbronn
a small sandy beach on the lake with a playground - not a swimming lake, but your feet can definitely splash around in the water. The "Alte Reederei" bike service station between the lake and the banks of the Neckar is a good place to stop for a bite to eat. You can enjoy a picnic in the Bäckereicafé a few meters away. - Deutsches Zweirad- & NSU-Museum | Neckarsulm
play easy rider on old motorbikes - Visitors' salt mine | Bad Friedrichshall
rush down 180m in the pit cage, cool laser show underground - Neckaruferpromenade | Offenau
With sun deck on the Neckar & cool wave loungers for resting by the water, in summer food truck directly on the Neckar
Small discoveries along the way
In addition to the large play and rest stations, the section also has numerous small natural highlights and discoveries to offer:
- Rock faces between Lauffen a.N. and Nordheim:
The Neckar Valley cycle path runs along a narrow strip between the Necker river and steeply rising rock faces, with a few rows of vines in between. The cycle path is secured with a stable parapet to the water and is also easy for children to ride on. - Dam & Neckar lock Horkheim
The Neckar is crossed twice in quick succession. The weir and the Neckar lock are impressive structures and definitely worth a short stop. At the Neckar lock, you can even look directly into the dam chamber. - Nackartalbrücke between Heilbronn and Neckarsulm
A huge structure to marvel at, with a 6-lane highway running over it. - Neckarwehr & Neckaraue Neckarsulm
A section of contrasts between Bad Friedrichshall and Neckarsulm. On one side the Neckar Canal and the huge Audi factory, on the other side of the cycle path the Neckar floodplain nature reserve - Klostergarten Bad Wimpfen
From the Neckar Valley cycle path you can peer through an iron gate into the monastery garden. If you have a little more time, cycle to the forecourt of the monastery and the Ritterstiftskirche church. There is a fountain there for refreshment.
Safety instructions & route
With a few exceptions, this section of the Neckar Valley cycle path runs as a separate cycle path away from roads and motor vehicle traffic. Please pay particular attention to three places for smaller children:
- Neckarwehr Neckarsulm:
A short section (approx. 150 m) along a busy road on the combined cycle and footpath. The road is crossed at a cycle and pedestrian traffic light. - Between Heinsheim and Gundelsheim, the cycle path runs for around 2.4 km directly next to a country road without any special separation. The cycle path is well developed in this section and the road is usually not very busy.
- Neckar barrage and Gundelsheim lock -
the recommendation is to dismount and push. The section (approx. 350 m) runs as a combined cycle/footpath over the bridge and is quite narrow. The road is busy at times.
