About 200-135 million years ago, the area around Balingen was covered by the subtropical Jurassic Sea. This left us with the sedimentary rock that today makes up the Alb foreland, Albtrauf and Alb plateau. During a hike along the GeoWanderweg, the entire range of Jurassic rock layers can be discovered. Numerous fossilized remains of ancient sea creatures can be found in some Jurassic layers.
Water as a landscape-forming element plays a central role along this hike. The formation of springs and waterfalls or the formation of gorges are explained on the basis of visible nature. The landscape, characterized by the rocks of the Brown Jurassic, nestles with its predominantly soft surface forms against the steeply rising slopes of the White Jurassic. This forms the ridge line of the horizon in many areas. Once you have scaled the heights of the White Jura, a landscape lies at your feet that radiates a heavenly tranquillity with its pastures, forests, valleys and scattered villages.
